How I Tried to Be the Perfect Mompreneur (and Failed Miserably)

When I first started my business, I thought it would be easy—like, a walk in the park. I imagined that my 2-year-old would nap while I worked, and my 10-year-old would be at school, giving me peaceful hours to focus on building my dream. Simple, right? Wrong.

The reality of being a Mompreneur hit me hard. I quickly found myself in a constant tug-of-war between success and sleep. As much as I wanted my business to thrive, I also longed for the sleep I was missing. Every mom knows the drill—sleep when the baby sleeps. But when I was deep in building my business, sleep felt like a luxury I couldn’t afford.

Here’s a peek into my typical day back then, and trust me, it was anything but glamorous:

My mornings started way too early. I barely had enough time to get things going before waking up my 10-year-old, getting her ready for school, and getting her out the door. While doing this, I was also logging into my work-from-home job, grabbing a cup of coffee (forget breakfast), and preparing my 2-year-old’s breakfast.

By the time my daughter got on the school bus, I would finally sit down at my computer for work, but just when I thought I could catch my breath, my little one would wake up and be ready to eat. So, I would juggle feeding him while keeping up with work emails, calls, and client tasks. This back-and-forth continued for hours while I was trying to make progress on my business.

Once my shift was done, it was straight into mom mode. Homework with my daughter, cooking dinner, and spending quality time with the kids—by the time all that was finished, I was exhausted. There was still work to do for my business, like marketing, editing my website, and responding to emails, but let’s be real: after a full day, all I really wanted was a glass of wine and a good movie.

Looking back, I realize how overwhelming it was. I would sometimes wonder if it was worth it, but here’s what I know now: I never gave up. I kept pushing forward, even when the road was tough and messy. The challenges didn’t defeat me, and they didn’t define me.

I built something important. I built something for myself and my family, and that’s what kept me going.

Dear Brown Girl,

I know the struggles you face. There are days when it feels like everything is on your shoulders, and you’re just trying to keep your head above water. But remember, you don’t have to be perfect to be successful. Keep showing up, keep pushing forward, and most importantly—don’t forget to give yourself grace. You’re doing the best you can, and that’s more than enough.

With Infinite Love Always, Your Truest Self 🖤🤎
